Summary of Third Grade:

Grade 3 Lessons

In third grade, the lessons become more abstract and require critical thinking skills. In the area of mathematics, the grade 3 lessons include addition and subtraction facts. These are expected to be recited quickly and accurately, and concepts such as place value should be understood in order for the students to move on and be successful in multiplication, division, along with the adding and subtracting of multiple digits. Fractions are also more complex, as the students begin to learn about mixed numerals. Grade 3 lessons in language and arts become more advanced with fluency and accuracy being targeted, as well as the comprehension of a variety of texts. The learners are immersed in many types of reading and writing. They develop critical thinking skills through the grade 3 lessons on story themes, main idea, figurative language, character traits, and point of view, along with locating information and finding evidence in literary and informational texts.  There is also an emphasis on learning new vocabulary and integrating that vocabulary into everyday writing and language.
